Video coming soon. The video teaching for Day 16 is still in production. Read the full lesson below, it will be added here as soon as it is ready.

We've spent several days walking through six hard sacrifices: self-pleasure, self-trust, anonymity, comfort and convenience, escape, excuses. But underneath all six, there's one more thing to let go of: the thing that let all the others get their grip on you in the first place.

"How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple?"
· Proverbs 1:22

Proverbs is describing a man who actually prefers not knowing: who prefers not thinking too hard about how he keeps ending up in the same place. Thinking hard about it is uncomfortable; not thinking about it is easy, so he keeps choosing easy. That's simplicity: not innocence, but willful shallowness. This is a guy who wants to keep swimming in the shallow end forever.

Paul describes the opposite: we're not ignorant of Satan's schemes, the way he actually operates. Not ignorant: on purpose. Because the alternative to being wise about how temptation works on you is being simple about it, and simple men keep losing the same fight the same way, over and over, calling it bad luck.

You're never at your most vulnerable out of nowhere

There's always a condition underneath it. Here are six of them, in a word that's easy to remember (STABLE) because it's exactly what the enemy is trying to keep you from being:

  • Stressed: your body and mind are under pressure, looking for the fastest possible relief valve.
  • Tired: your defenses run on willpower, and willpower runs on rest. Late at night, worn out, is prime hunting ground.
  • Angry: anger looks for an outlet, and lust is happy to be one.
  • Belittled: that quiet sense that you don't really matter, that nobody would notice if you disappeared. Porn offers a counterfeit: a world where you're wanted, powerful, significant.
  • Lonely: porn offers a counterfeit intimacy exactly when real intimacy feels unavailable.
  • Empty: that quiet, low-grade sense that something's missing, that life feels flat.
Level 2 · Complete

Watching for these six takes more than willpower.

It takes people who know your patterns and check in before the ambush, not after. That's what the community is for.

Why naming these matters

Knowing this doesn't excuse anything. But it does mean you can see the punch coming, and it's very hard to block a punch you never saw coming.

When you feel lonely, that's the moment to call someone, before you pick up your phone. When you're stressed and tired and it's late and you're alone, that's the moment to pray out loud, get up and do something physical, go to bed: anything other than sit there with a screen in your hand. You don't have to wait until you get hit. You can recognize the conditions and make a different move before the temptation even fully forms.

That's the whole difference between a simple man and a wise one. The simple man gets surprised every time. The wise man has already looked at the terrain and knows where the ambush usually happens.

"...and give no opportunity to the devil."
· Ephesians 4:27

Don't let one of these six conditions become an open door just because you never bothered to notice it coming.

What to do today

Identify which of the six shows up most consistently right before you fall. Pick one. Decide right now (not later) what one specific thing you'll do the next time that condition shows up, instead of what you've always done.

Write it down. Say it out loud. Tell someone.

The man who's already decided what he's going to do is a completely different man than the one who gets ambushed every time and acts shocked about it.

That's Level 2, six sacrifices, six things you've stopped protecting so you can start winning, plus one more: the luxury of not seeing it coming.
