I want to tell you something that surprises a lot of single men: the ability to talk honestly about sex with your future wife is not something that shows up automatically on your wedding night. It's a skill. And like every skill, it's built through practice, which means the practice has to start now, long before there's anyone to practice it with.

The mistake I see most often

A man spends years working hard on purity (guarding his eyes, fighting temptation, building real discipline) and assumes that once he's disciplined enough, the marriage conversation about sex will just take care of itself. It won't.

Discipline and communication are two completely different skills. You can walk into marriage having conquered temptation and still have no idea how to talk to your wife when something feels off between you: when desire doesn't match, when something from your past resurfaces, when she needs to tell you something vulnerable and you don't know how to receive it without feeling attacked or flinching.

So today isn't about a conversation you're having right now. It's about becoming the kind of man who'll actually be capable of that conversation later.

Where it starts: honesty now, with someone

If you've spent years keeping your past with pornography a private, silent burden (something you manage alone), you're training yourself toward secrecy, not honesty. And secrecy doesn't disappear the day you get married. It just finds a new hiding place. The man who can't say "I'm struggling" to a mentor or accountability partner today is not going to magically become the man who can say it to his wife later. That skill has to be practiced somewhere safe first.

Find someone now (a mentor, a pastor, a trusted friend) and practice actual honesty with them. Not vague honesty. Specific: what you're tempted by, what you're afraid of, what shame you're still carrying.

Level 3 · Healing

You don't have to practice this alone.

Confess and pray with others now, so honesty is already a practiced habit by the time your marriage needs it.

Learning to talk about sex without shutting down

G.K. Chesterton once made a sharp observation about how strangely we handle this topic: that we tend to lose respect for men who can only joke about sex, yet somehow feel just as uncomfortable when someone tries to speak about it seriously and earnestly instead.

That's exactly right. A lot of us grew up in church or family cultures where sex was talked about in two modes only: warning, or nothing at all. That leaves a lot of men fumbling for actual words once they're married. Start now, in appropriate settings (premarital counseling, honest conversations with a pastor or mentor, honest reflection in your own journaling), practicing language for desire, for boundaries, for what intimacy actually means, so it's not the first time you've ever said these words out loud when you're standing in front of her.

Decide now what kind of husband you'll be

One day, your wife may need to tell you something vulnerable: a fear about her body, a past wound, a moment she felt disconnected from you, or simply that she wasn't in the mood and worries you'll take it personally. How you receive that moment will be shaped entirely by whether you've practiced receiving hard truths without defensiveness before that day arrives. Practice that now. When a friend confronts you, when a mentor challenges you, when you're corrected, notice whether your instinct is to get defensive or to actually listen. That instinct doesn't change on your wedding day. Whatever you're building now is what she'll get later.

Start praying now

Pray that God would give you courage to speak plainly instead of hiding, and grace to receive her honesty without wounding her for giving it.

You are not just waiting for a wife right now. You are becoming the husband she's going to need: one honest conversation, one moment of practiced vulnerability, at a time. The talking doesn't start on your wedding night. It starts today, with whoever God has already put in your life to practice it on.
