As we finish this series together, I'd like to leave you with one final thought: what does victory actually look like? Because most men define it far too small.

Most men define victory very simply: "I didn't look at pornography today." That's certainly part of it, but it's much too small. God isn't merely interested in producing men who avoid pornography. He's producing men who love truth, who walk in humility, who understand themselves better, who delight in Christ more deeply, and who gradually become more like Jesus. Freedom from pornography is part of that transformation, but it isn't the whole story.

This program is built around six levels of victory. I want to walk you through them here, because if your husband goes through this process, you'll begin recognizing these changes in him. In fact, he may already be experiencing some of them.

Level 1: I Confess and Repent Whenever I Sin

The first level of victory usually surprises people. Most of us assume victory begins when a man finally stops struggling. The Bible actually points us somewhere earlier than that. Victory begins the moment a man stops hiding.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

1 John 1:9 (ESV)

When a man begins running toward God instead of away from him, something profound has already happened. He's no longer protecting his image. That doesn't mean the battle is over. It means the direction of his life has changed, and that's the first evidence the Holy Spirit is at work.

Level 2: I Sacrifice Whatever Is Necessary to Create Distance From Temptation

The second level is where repentance becomes practical.

I have made a covenant with my eyes; how then could I gaze at a virgin?

Job 31:1 (ESV)

Flee from sexual immorality.

1 Corinthians 6:18 (ESV)

Neither verse describes a passive posture. A covenant with the eyes is a deliberate decision made in advance. Fleeing isn't standing your ground, it's putting real distance between yourself and the danger. Sincere repentance always produces visible changes: removing access points, giving up certain habits, becoming willing to lose privacy if privacy has become dangerous. This is often encouraging for wives, because they finally begin seeing repentance expressed in concrete ways, not promises alone.

Level 3: I Confess and Pray With Others to Receive Healing

The third level is where many men begin experiencing genuine healing.

Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed.

James 5:16 (ESV)

Forgiveness is something God grants immediately to the repentant sinner. Healing is usually a process, one that happens as men learn to live honestly with other believers. If your husband reaches this point, you'll probably notice something changing: he'll become less concerned with protecting his reputation and more concerned with protecting his soul.

Level 4: I Discern the Enemy's Footholds in My Life to Preserve Victory

The fourth level is where a man begins learning something about himself he probably never understood before.

And give no opportunity to the devil.

Ephesians 4:27 (ESV)

Many men spend years fighting temptation without ever studying it. As they begin asking questions like "When am I most vulnerable? What lies am I believing when temptation feels strongest?", they often discover patterns they'd never noticed: exhaustion, loneliness, stress, or simply being alone for long stretches of time. As a wife, you may begin noticing your husband talking differently, instead of "I was tempted," he begins saying, "I can see why today was difficult." He's learning to recognize the battlefield before the battle begins.

Level 5: I Increase Joy in the Lord So Temptation Loses Its Power

The fifth level is where the conversation begins shifting away from pornography altogether. God starts replacing old desires with better ones.

You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

Psalm 16:11 (ESV)

As men recover, many rediscover things they haven't enjoyed in years: friendships, presence with their children, richer worship, more meaningful work. Joy is one of God's greatest weapons against temptation. That doesn't mean temptation disappears. It means temptation begins losing some of its power because his heart has found something better.

Level 6: I Am Transformed in My Thinking So I See People as God Sees Them

Finally, there is the sixth level, and in many ways it's the deepest one of all: God begins changing not merely what a man does, but the way he actually sees people.

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God.

Romans 12:2 (ESV)

Pornography teaches a man to reduce women to bodies, to consume rather than honor. A recovering man gradually learns to see women the way God sees them, not as temptations to manage, but as image-bearers worthy of dignity, honor, and respect. That transformation affects the way he thinks, speaks, and ultimately the way he loves his own wife.

For Him

These six levels are the actual structure of the program.

Not just avoiding pornography, becoming the kind of man these six levels describe.

What to Watch For

If your husband is genuinely pursuing Christ, don't evaluate his progress only by counting days or months. Pay attention to the deeper changes:

  1. Is he becoming quicker to repent? (Confession)
  2. Is he making real sacrifices? (Distance)
  3. Is he walking honestly with other men? (Healing)
  4. Is he learning his weaknesses instead of pretending they don't exist? (Discernment)
  5. Is he finding greater joy in Christ and the life God has given him? (Joy)
  6. Is he becoming more respectful, more humble, more truthful, and more like Jesus? (Renewal)

Those are the changes that endure. They're also the changes that give me hope, because they're the kind of work only the Holy Spirit can do. When you begin seeing those things in a man's life, you're not just watching someone quit a bad habit. You're watching God shape him into a different kind of man.
