This is the married version of Day 40. Read the unmarried version →

John Wesley once wrote something I want to build today on: "Love the creature, as it leads to the Creator." I've quoted that phrase before in this series, but today I want to point it somewhere specific, somewhere a lot of men have never been taught to point it. Your wife.

Here's what I want to say plainly: your desire for your wife, real, physical, can't-stop-thinking-about-her desire, is not a problem to be managed. It's not a lesser appetite you tolerate because marriage happens to include it. It's a "creature," a good gift, and Wesley's whole point is that a good gift, rightly loved, leads you to the Creator instead of away from Him.

I'm not asking you to formalize anything or make this clinical. What I am saying is this: it's urgent that you learn to anticipate her, imagine her, and let your heart genuinely fill up with desire for her, on purpose, long before you're in the room.

Why this urgency matters

We've spent this whole level talking about how sin isn't killed by starving desire, it's killed by satisfying it somewhere greater. If that's true, the fight against lust was never going to be won just by turning down the volume on your desire in general. It's won by turning the volume way up on desire for the one place God has actually given you to enjoy it.

A man who's not intentionally cultivating desire for his wife has left a vacancy. And vacancies get filled, usually by whatever's easiest, cheapest, and most available. The battle isn't just "don't look at that." The battle is "build a fire over here so strong the flicker over there doesn't stand a chance."

Level 5 · Joy

Redeemed desire needs a home.

The six levels walk married men through building real desire for their wives, on purpose.

Practical ways to build that fire

  • Compliment her body, out loud, specifically, regularly, not just "you look nice," but naming what you actually find beautiful about her.
  • Think about her during the day, not as a stray thought you feel guilty about, but as a deliberate practice. Let your mind go to her instead of somewhere else when a quiet moment opens up.
  • Text her something that pursues her and builds anticipation across the whole day, not just the final ten minutes before bed.
  • Study her. Learn what she loves, what makes her feel desired versus just used, and treat that study as an act of love, not a checklist.
  • Pursue non-sexual touch all day, so sexual touch isn't the only kind of touch she gets from you, a hand on her back in the kitchen, a long hug, holding her hand in the car.
  • Protect your imagination for her specifically. When your mind wanders toward fantasy, practice redirecting it toward her, actual memories, actual anticipation of actual intimacy with your actual wife.
  • Talk about your sex life together outside the bedroom, what you enjoy, what you'd love to try. Let it be something you're both building.
  • Remove the guilt. If shame has followed you into your marriage bed for years, some of that healing has to happen before God directly, a mind still flinching with guilt can't fully anticipate and enjoy at the same time.

This is what redeemed desire looks like, not a man who's trained himself to want less, but a man whose wanting has a home: a real, whole, exclusive, growing desire for his wife strong enough to make every counterfeit look as sad as it actually is.

What to do this week

Take some time alone, just you and a notebook, and write out your actual desire for her. Her body, as it really is. Her whole person. A real memory. What you'd love to explore with her, communicated, mutual, hers to say yes to. Not a script pornography handed you with her name taped on top. Something true, something yours, something about her.

Wesley was right. Love the creature as it leads you to the Creator. Let your desire for her become one of the truest acts of worship you offer all week.
