I want to talk to you today about a woman you haven't met yet.

Maybe you have someone in mind. Maybe you don't. Either way, somewhere out there, if marriage is part of your story, there's a woman who is going to become your wife. Here's something that might surprise you: what you do with your desire right now, today, alone, with no one to righteously aim it at yet, is already shaping the man she's going to marry.

The mistake a lot of single men make

They hear "purity" and think it means shutting desire off: numbing it, treating it like a switch left in the "off" position until the wedding night, then somehow flipped on like nothing happened in between. There's a better way.

God isn't in the business of killing desire. He's in the business of aiming it. So the real question isn't "how do I make myself want less." It's "how do I steward this desire well, for someone I haven't even met yet."

Right now, your desire has no name attached to it. That's exactly what makes this season so important, and so dangerous. Desire with no name attached will find one: it'll attach itself to an image on a screen, a stranger, a fantasy stitched together out of a hundred bodies that don't belong to you. And every time it does, you're training your desire toward something that will never actually be your wife.

So here's the discipline: start giving your desire a name before you know her name. Start directing it toward "her," the actual, specific, real woman you'll one day share a bed and a life with, instead of letting it wander toward whoever's convenient today.

Level 5 · Joy

Your desire isn't the enemy. It just needs a name.

The six levels teach you to aim desire toward joy instead of numbing it. Walk it with men in the same season.

What that looks like practically

  1. Pray for her. Not generically, specifically. Ask God to protect her heart the same way you're asking Him to protect yours.
  2. Thank God for her, too. Even now, before you know her name, thank Him that He already knows it. Let your heart actually desire that union, not just the physical part, but the whole of it: the companionship, the intimacy, the mystery of two lives becoming one. That desire isn't something to be ashamed of. Let yourself want it fully, honestly, and let the wanting turn into worship.
  3. Guard what you feed your eyes and mind now, as an act of loyalty to someone you haven't met. Every time you turn away from pornography or fantasy, you're being faithful to her before you've even shaken her hand.
  4. Practice honoring women now: how you talk about women with your friends, how you treat a woman on a date, how you handle attraction when it hits unexpectedly. All of that is rehearsal.
  5. Let your imagination anticipate marriage itself, not just a body. Picture real intimacy: closeness, trust, laughter, a whole shared life, instead of letting your mind shrink desire down to only the physical. The fuller your picture of what you're waiting for, the less power a cheap counterfeit will have over you today.

What to do this week

Take some time, alone, with a notebook, no one else needs to see it, and write down your hopes and dreams for what marriage and sex will actually be like. Not a fantasy pulled from a screen. Something real: what trust feels like, what it means to be fully known and still wanted, the laughter, the safety, the permanence of it.

When temptation comes, remind yourself what you're actually protecting: not a rule, but a future gift. You're keeping something whole so you have something real to give her.

Here's an affirmation for you:

"My wife has a name, even before I know it. I am not waiting for nothing. I am waiting for her. Every no I say tonight is a promise kept to her, a yes to a greater joy in her body and soul. I am not just resisting. I am becoming."
